Interview with Republican Voter on NPR's Morning Edition

Why do people vote against their economic interests?

i was listening to NPR's morning edition today on KUOW and they were talking about their last political poll of the year, which basically demonstrated that voters were still upset with the Republican party, that if the 2008 election were held today some 46 percent of voters favour a Democratic presidential candidate over 28 percent who favour a Republican.

i found it curious that the woman they interview from chicago, a long time supporter of the republican party, said she was disenchanted with the republican party because they were emphasizing social issues like gay marriage over more long term substanative issues like social security and health care reform.  she said, "i don't want to be eating cat food when i grow old" or something like that.  i shouted at the radio, "so why do you support the republican party at all?"  she just mentioned two core democratic issues, and  a third (gay marriage) that the left would like to see go away as well, by treating everybody equally and allow it without restriction.

i would like to know why she votes republican if she fears that socialist services like health care and pensions might not be available to her when she retires? 0 Comments, 0 trackbacks (Trackback URL)
