I saw the last episode of season one of Chuck last night and now I cannot find respite from the closing montage song, I Melt with You by Modern English. I flashed back to childhood and watching Valley Girl, identifying with Nic Cage and his portrait of Randy the Punker. I felt this maudlin twinge of nostalgic melancholy that longed for that golden age, the garden of eden, of adolescent life. If only my emotional strings could be strummed by art that is a little less embarrassing and certainly more fulfilling and enduring.
I am a product of the 80s, whether I like it or not, and I have come to accept the sad fact that songs by Shenna Easton, Reo Speedwagon, Styx, Supertramp, and a whole host of others that I am too ashamed to catalogue at the present time, are inextricable linked to my golden age, so please do not judge me if you hear me singing Don't You (Forget About Me) while walking down the street one day. Give me the knowing high sign and just walk on by.
