Gruntle Enterprise

Having a domain name that goes back to 1993, and an accompanying website that has been around for the same amount of time, coupled with the fact that it is a .edu site, means that we receive a lot of traffic from nefarious sources.  Spiders and bots would hit our site will alarming regularity, and until recently put a huge strain on our servers when they passed by.  In our robots.txt file, I included several paths that did not need to be indexed by legitimate spiders, like our calendar for example, but many of the nasty bots do not obey the robots.txt protocols. 

That's where Apache's mod_rewrite comes in handy.  The good folks at Perishable Press have put together a comprehensive blacklist that raises a 403 forbidden error whenever the rule matches the user agent on an incoming request.  We had to remove a few items, like "Link" and "Link*Slueth" and "Xenu", since those rules matched the link verifying software we use in house to find 404s on the site, but aside from that it was plug and play.

I want to reproduce the rewrite rule here, because for me it was not so easy to find, and there are other sites out there that have more complex rules that do not seem to offer anything more than the compressed version from Perishable.  Because it is one long line, simply select the text and copy it to view in its entirety:
